Position Summary:

The St. Croix Education Advisory Committee seeks applicants to fill five critical member positions. An ideal committee would consist of parents/guardians of children in K-12 schools, 1 representative from each of the four areas of Danbury, Maple Plain, Sand Lake, and Round Lake, and a cultural and/or elder representative. A complete application requires a job application, a letter of interest, and an abbreviated resume. The mission of the St. Croix Tribal Education Department is to support St. Croix youth, families, and individuals in reaching their goals by addressing their unique academic, cultural, and language needs throughout their lifelong educational journey, from Early Childhood through K-12, higher education, and community settings. The role advises and supports the Tribal Education Department Director in assessing community needs for improving programmatic and student outcomes. Each member will serve as an advocate by supporting St. Croix Tribal Education and increasing awareness and communication of programmatic Ojibwe language initiatives from early childhood through adult and community education for all St. Croix communities and tribal members. The Committee will be required to meet monthly. The Committee will also approve the Johnson O’Malley educational plan, as well as the proposed guidelines and expenditure lists, annually submitted by the Tribal Education Department.

Essential Functions:

The Board will consist of five officers: Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Active Member, and Cultural/Elder/Community Representative. All official business will be guided by the Tribal Education Department as well as Federal policies, procedures, and compliance standards of the Title VI, and Johnson O’Malley Programs, and other youth and adult programs established by the St. Croix Tribal Education Department.

SEAC Job Duties:

  • Attend and actively participate in monthly meetings and other established and other emergency approved meetings
  • Provide recommendations for Ojibwe language curriculum and programs, as well as harvest activities for youth and adults
  • Collaborate with St. Croix Tribal Education Department Director and Coordinators to provide recommendations for educational programs and initiatives for pre-k-12 and adult learning for St. Croix and other affiliated Native Nations’ youth.
  • Assist in reviewing and evaluating programmatic initiatives to help build standards and other needed policies for the Tribal Education Department
  • Provide recommendations for developing and offering culturally relevant practices in programs, services, and other activities for St. Croix Ojibwe youth
  • Participate in St. Croix Tribal Education Department events and programs to support youth and community members
  • Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical conduct always
  • Participated in training or professional development opportunities as recommended by the Tribal Education Director
  • Any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Type of Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A

Supervisory Responsibilities: The Chair will lead all meetings. In the Chair’s absence, the Vice Chair will lead. The Secretary will take notes for all meetings and file all necessary documents. The Active Member and Cultural Representative will be active participants and will provide recommendations to the department and its programs.

Directly Reporting to: St Croix Tribal Education Department Director

Scope and Complexity: Interacts with all levels of management and employees; often trusted with maintaining confidentiality and relaying highly sensitive information, and the appropriate application of business operations and practices.

Physical Demands/Environment Factors: Typical Office Environment: (Accountant, Administrative Assistant, Consultant, and Program Manager) – Examples listed below:

  • Requires extensive sitting during meetings (in-person or virtual).
  • May require significant use of personal computer, phone, and general office equipment.
  • Need ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing, engaging in group discussion, and speaking in person or on the telephone.
  • Requires participation in educational, training, or professional development opportunities as designed by the St. Croix Education Department.
  • May require periodic travel to rotating meeting locations or off-site travel.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proficiency or working understanding of the Ojibwe language
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Knowledge of history and cultural understanding as it relates to the St. Croix Ojibwe
  • Proficiency level typically gained through a high school diploma.
  • Must demonstrate ability to assess student and St. Croix community adult needs and to provide guidance and recommendations to the director.
  • Ability to identify potential issues and concerns while proactively addressing challenges in education
  • Requires basic to intermediate level computer skills and the ability to access information in meaningful ways.
  • Requires skill in conflict resolution and, more so, in the intentional process of team building.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all levels of employees and managers.
  • Requires effective presentation, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Needs commitment to timeliness and attention to detail for acceptable student and family needs or service.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate and or bachelor’s degree in early education, education, Social Work, or other closely related field
  • Croix Tribal Member or parents and/or guardians of tribally enrolled children in K-12 surrounding public schools

Native American Preference Given in Accordance with P.L. 93-638 and Amendments.
